Length at the back center of the shirt = 55-65 cm
Length at the back center of the dress = 105-115 cm

→ To the sewing pattern “Athens”

Athens was sewn from a viscose jersey in this tutorial.

Materials needed:

We recommend a soft, flowing jersey fabric.

Sizes 34-42 Outer fabric 1.20 m 140 cm wide
Size 44-50 Outer fabric 1.30 m 140 cm wide
Sizes 34-50 elastic band 32-51 cm 0.5 cm wide
Sizes 34-50 Outer fabric dress 2.10 m 140 cm wide

Cut:

Cut out the pattern pieces from your outer fabrics. Place the fabric right side up. Align the selvedges parallel to the center so you can lay the back piece on the fold. All pattern pieces should be placed with the printed side facing up. Always align the grainline arrow in the same direction on all pieces, parallel to the selvedge of the fabric. Transfer all notches from the pattern by making a 3mm snip with scissors or using chalk. Snip the seam allowance on the fold, as this is always the center point.

Seam allowances are included - 1cm wide or as indicated by the marking notches!

The pattern pieces are cut open. There is no break!

You will need the following from Jersey:

  • 1x back piece in half
  • 1x front top
  • 1x front bottom part
  • 2x sleeves, mirrored

Sewing instructions:

To sew this shirt you will need a sewing machine and an overlock sewing machine, or alternatively the zigzag stitch of your sewing machine to finish the cut edges.

Be sure to use a jersey needle and a stretch stitch. If you're using a domestic sewing machine, you should use either a zigzag stitch or a three-step elastic stitch. Afterwards, finish all seam allowances with a zigzag stitch or another suitable stitch to prevent fraying. The colored lines in the pictures, in addition to the written instructions, show you where to sew seams.
When sewing, pay attention to the seam allowance included in the pattern. Seam allowances not specifically marked are 1 cm wide!
Have fun sewing!

You start with the upper front part.

Gathering threads are inserted into the lower dividing seam. These help to achieve even gathering. To do this, select the longest stitch setting on your sewing machine. Do not backstitch at the beginning and end of the gathering stitches; leave approximately 10 cm of thread. Sew two gathering stitches approximately 1 cm apart, at 0.5 cm and 1.5 cm from the cut edge, so that the final seam will run precisely between the two gathering stitches. Pay attention to the pattern markings to determine the area where gathering is required.

Now you can sew the upper front piece to the lower front piece and finish the seam together. Then pull out the gathering threads.

Now you stitch the elastic band from side seam to side seam, keeping it taut, onto the seam allowance.

Next, you finish the raw edges of the neckline on the front and back pieces. Then, you immediately press the front and back neckline edges under.

The shoulder seams of the front and back pieces are placed right sides together and sewn in one stitch using the attached facing. Use a small stitch for this, as you will need to clip into the corner afterwards.

You iron the shoulder and facing seams open and fold the facing inwards onto the shoulder. At the armhole, you secure the seam allowance.

Place the front piece right sides together with the back piece and sew both side seams as shown in the pattern. Finish the seam allowances together and press them towards the front.

Now the hem is finished, ironed 2cm around and stitched down.

Now you prepare the sleeves. Place the side seam of the sleeve right sides together, stitch the seam, finish the seam allowance together and press it forward.

Then the sleeve hem is finished, ironed 2cm over and stitched down.

Next, the sleeve can be sewn into the armhole. Pay attention to the notches. The seam allowance is finished together and pressed into the sleeve.
